Southern English Pea Salad

Southern English Pea Salad

Southern English Pea Salad

Although I didn’t eat Southern English Pea Salad, particularly growing up, I have had a fair amount of it after moving to the USA.

I was initially introduced to this one at an Easter brunch gathering in church we attended many moons ago.

I have a really good memory; sometimes it’s a blessing and sometimes a true curse. Anyway, to continue with my post.

Additionally, it made me think of the Oliver SALAD I’ve been preparing for a very long time. It’s a “Russian” salad as we call it, but it’s known as Oliver Salad

To be perfectly honest with you this one is a pleasantly uncomplicated side dish made with delicate sweet peas, bacon, cheese cubes, and red onion in a mayonnaise and sour cream-based dressing.

side dish

Ideal side dish for potlucks, and family get-togethers. I love adding boiled eggs, ham, and pickles from time to time. It just adds something extra.

  • Low Carb dish, so it is ideal for Ketogenic diet and people with Diabetes who are watching on carb intake.
  • This traditional pea salad recipe is cooked, so the process is quite easy.
  • This dish got the perfect texture; Crispy and cool with a creamy dressing that has a bit of tartness.
  • Simple, inexpensive, and delicious!
  • It goes great with ham, chicken, or even BBQ.

Easy and Tasty Southern English Pea Salad

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bacon
  • 1 (10-oz) package of frozen peas, thawed and drained
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese cubes
  • 2 tbsp. chopped dill
  • 1/4 tbsp. black pepper
  • 1/8 tbsp. sea salt, a pinch
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

Optional:

  • 2 hard-cooked eggs, peeled and chopped
  • Cubed smoked ham

Instructions

  1. Air Fry Bacon (bake or fry in the
    skillet).
  2. Place frozen peas in a pot of water and let it defrost. Yes, you can
use canned, but I really enjoy the taste of frozen peas.
  3. While bacon is crisping up, and frozen peas defrosting, chop the onion and
you may make cheese cubes smaller if you prefer that way which my family do.
  4. I like combing dressing on the side, adding it to the salad bowl, and tossing everything together.
  5. Now when everything is cooked, chopped, and defrosted, combine it.
  6. Keep it in the fridge and serve cold.

Notes

Ham is a great addition if you like to add, just use a nice thick sliced and cubed ham.

I like adding boiled eggs which I didn’t this time to keep it more traditional, but you could and it makes it so rich and tasty;
•8 minutes for hard-boiled eggs or 13 minutes at 250F in an air fryer… pull them out of boiling water or air fryer, break eggs for a bit, and place in ice-cold water for 5 minutes before peeling.

If you prefer shredded cheese please do add shredded.
