Simple Focaccia

Simple Focaccia

Focaccia is a type of Italian bread that is known for its flat and oven-baked texture. Usually made with olive oil, water, salt, and high-gluten flour, it can also occasionally have herbs, spices, and other ingredients like tomatoes or olives on top.

Before baking, focaccia is frequently seasoned with olive oil and coarse salt, which gives it a delectably savory flavor.

I love preparing it with herbs and tomatoes, but in this case, I used tomatoes, onion, green onions, olives, oregano, basil, a good drizzle of olive oil, and freshly shredded parmesan cheese. It was amazing!

However, the traditional version tastes even better when you prepare the tomato salad with quality olive oil, tear apart the focaccia, and then dip it into the sauce that the juicy tomato left behind.

I could seriously live on it alone especially when tomatoes are homegrown and super sweet.

Also, this is fantastic for sandwiches, with breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We love this bread very much.

There are many delicious variations of focaccia that you can try. Here are a few popular and tasty options:

1. Classic Focaccia: This is the traditional version of focaccia, topped with olive oil, sea salt, and sometimes fresh herbs like rosemary. It has a simple yet flavorful taste.

2. Tomato and Mozzarella Focaccia: This variation adds sliced tomatoes and mozzarella cheese on top of the dough before baking. The cheese melts and the tomatoes become slightly roasted, creating a delicious combination of flavors.

3. Olive Focaccia: This version includes sliced or pitted olives on top of the dough, adding a briny and savory taste to the bread. You can use your favorite type of olives, such as Kalamata or green olives.

4. Herb Focaccia: This focaccia is seasoned with a variety of fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme, and oregano. The herbs infuse the bread with a fragrant and aromatic flavor.

5. Onion Focaccia: Sliced onions are caramelized and added on top of the dough, giving the focaccia a slightly sweet and savory taste. It pairs well with cheeses or cured meats

Enjoy your homemade focaccia! Feel free to customize it with your favorite toppings and flavors.

Simple Focaccia
Yield: 6 SERVINGS

Simple Focaccia

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Additional Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup olive oil

Toppings of your choice (e.g., olive oil, sea salt, fresh herbs, sliced tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, olives)

  • I used tomatoes, onion, green onions, olives, dried oregano, dried basil, a good drizzle of olive oil, and freshly shredded parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. In a separate small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a dough forms.
  3. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough back into the bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.
  6. Once the dough has risen, transfer it to the prepared baking sheet and gently press it down to fit the shape of the pan. If desired, you can stretch the dough out to make it thinner.
  7. Use your fingertips to create dimples all over the surface of the dough. Drizzle olive oil over the top and sprinkle with sea salt and any other toppings you like. I used tomatoes and a bit of red onion to create a fun flower design.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until golden brown and crispy on the edges.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
