Oval Pizza Boats

Oval Pizza Boats

After more research, I have chosen to call this dish Oval Pizza Boats because this style of flatbread with topping or filling appears in more than one country; therefore, we will refer to it as pizza boats.

The Turkish call these Pide, while the Greeks call them Peinirli. To be honest, it’s “almost” the same dish: flatbread shaped into a boat or canoe with your choice of toppings.

So, in order to avoid conflict between both countries, let’s call it what it is: pizza, one of the world’s favorite comfort foods.

Oval Pizza Boats

I’ve always been fascinated by food, cultures, and traditions. Even though I am not Turkish, Greek, or Italian, people send me requests about this recipe after posting it on my Instagram Story last December for my sons’ birthday.

Well, I enjoy researching and diving into food history; reading about it, watching many videos by natives, and educating myself on how to create something for my blog without offending anyone.

I like to be respectful because I know how sensitive people can be about their traditional foods. That is how I have always been, no matter what I make or post on this little corner of mine.

Finger Food Recipes

These Oval Pizza Boats are extremely simple to make, and I will show you exactly how to do so every time. Additionally, just like pizzas, I believe these are just a bit easier if you have a crowd; if you have vegetarian, you can make these with veggies, and if you have meat lovers, just add some sort of meaty protein, and you have mini individual pizzas in no time.

Our Favorite Finger Foods

What are your absolute favorite toppings? I love it all but my favorite is ham and mushrooms, and it always has been.

Now, with this one, I also love adding creamy spinach and a sprinkle of feta instead of traditional pizza toppings and serving it with maybe grilled chicken. I do not even have to make it meaty.

It is so delicious that you won’t regret making it for your family. Seriously the possibilities are endless!

These Oval Pizza Boats are super simple and really delicious.

Ingredients

  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 cup lukewarm whole milk
  • 1 tbsp. active dry yeast (use dry yeast according to packet details)
  • 1/2 tbsp. sugar

Topping on this one:

  • Onion
  • Mixed peppers
  • Gyro Precooked Meat
  • Mozzarella Cheese, shredded

Instructions

Dough:

  1. Add lukewarm water, yeast, and sugar in a small bowl. Allow yeast to bloom.
  2. Add AP flour and salt to a stand mixer with a kneading attachment if you do not have one, use a large mixing bowl.
  3. Once yeat bloomed, pour it over the flour, then start mixing while pouring 1 cup of warm milk. Let the mixer knead it for approximately 5 minutes or until the dough is smooth in texture but still soft and just a bit sticky. Again you can do this with your hands.
  4. Cover and let it rise for one hour. dough will almost double in size.

Topping:

  1. I used gyro meat; pre-cooked beef, and lamb.
  2. Cook peppers and onion, for a few minutes until softer, then add meat. Season with salt and pepper. My gyro meat was cooked so I just defrosted it and mixed them with my peppers.

NOTE: You can add any filling or topping of your choice.

Preheat Oven:

  1. Preheat the oven to 450F. Cut the risen dough into 10 pieces and shape them round. Cover the ones you don’t use with a damp clean kitchen towel so they do not dry out.
  2. Roll out one piece on a lightly floured surface into an oval shape that can fit onto your baking sheet. Place them into the baking dish, lined with fitting parchment paper. Add filling or topping of your choice on top leaving 2 inches of space at the edges.
  3. Fold the sides of the boats inside and press them well. Pinch the ends and seal, making it like a canoe. Hold it from the corners, stretch it a bit more as far as it can fit into your baking sheet. NOTE: I like adding filling in the baking sheet because it hard to transfer from countertop to baking sheet.
  4. Brush the sides with mixed egg and bake for about 18 to 20 minutes or until it is golden, and filling bubbly.

Notes

You can use any filling or topping.

For example, popular in my house are:

  • Creamed spinach and feta cheese boats
  • Minced meat and cheese
  • Chicken Fajita; cooked chicken and peppers
