Happy November Everybody! Now the real holiday rush begins, don't you agree?
I have so many Birthdays starting in November until the end of the year that I just wish to roll in a blanket and sleep over this period...but then I would miss all the good food!:)
Fried Food! I know it's bad for us, I know it all to well, but we all love it...I have hard time resisting if I do make something fried.
This idea was born when I wanted to eat something for my late breakfast...I was out of the Filo (Phyllo dough) but had several Wonton skins in my freezer so I thought should I make it like a sweet blueberry pies, or with ham and cheese. Of course I went for savory breakfast 'cause I am not much for sweets in the morning. My reaction when I took a first bite was "Oh, oh this is so good!" Took another bite and before I knew it I ended up eating three of these.
Rolls are unbelievably easy and you cannot get easier breakfast in 15 minutes, plus it's great for unexpected guests, for appetizers, for game nights such as football and the best thing is you can stuff them with whatever you like. If you are not Ham/Pork eater you can substitute it with leftover chicken, or turkey, you can use any cheese and just wrap and fry. Can you imagine putting some fresh mozzarella cheese and frying these?...idea just popped in my head-and very dangerous one!:)
I love Filo dough, don't get me wrong but Wonton skins have crunch too, they are very easy to work with and I must say they make a perfect roll.
So scroll down for the Recipe.

Serves 2~Makes 4 Rolls
Ingredients:
- 4 Wonton Skins/Wrappers-for egg rolls
- 3 slices Hickory Smoked Ham, cubed (or any other Meat/salami)
- 2 Tbs. Feta Cheese
- 1 Tbs. Sour Cream
- 1-2 Eggs, beaten
- 1/4 Cup Chopped Chives (4Tbs.)/or scallions, green part
- 1/4 tsp. Ground Black Pepper
- Oil for frying

Directions:
- If the Wonton was in freezer, then pull it out to defrost on a room temp for probably 15 minutes before making the rolls. You do not want them completely defrosted because they tend to rip apart.
- While you waiting for wonton to defrost, cube the ham(or other meat), add Feta, Sour Cream, Beaten eggs, Chopped Chives and ground black pepper; Stir everything together and start with rolls.
- Prepare one small glass or cup with water, and as you see on the Egg roll wrap picture begin by placing one of the egg roll wrappers on a flat surface (the egg roll wrapper should be flat as well). Place the egg roll wrapper so that any one corner points towards you. Place about 2 Tbs. of the ham and cheese mixture in the center of the wonton skin. Next, fold the corner of the wrapper that is pointing to you upwards, covering the mixture. Slightly tuck the egg roll wrapper under the mixture to secure it into place. Fold each side of the egg roll wrapper towards the center, over the enclosed mixture. Do this by folding one side over, and then overlapping it with the other side. Then, roll the egg roll, rolling towards the top of the wrapper, until it is completely rolled. In order to secure the end of the wrapper, wet your fingers with just a little bit of water, then rub a bit of the water onto the surface of the wrapper, and tap the end of the wrapper into place. Continue this process with the remaining Wonton skins/wrapper and filling.
- Heat the oil in fryer or deep pan(high then turn a heat just a bit down); drop carefully roll in and let it fry for 20 second on one side before turning it on the other side; repeat it one more time until you reach golden brown color of the roll, continue with the rest of the rolls and remember it is the best if you put one or two rolls at the time.
- Take the rolls out and onto paper towel to get rid of unnecessary grease.
- Serve them HOT with salad on the side.
Enjoy your weekend!
Your Friend,
Sandra

A great appetizer, love the filling! I am trying not to eat fried food very often, but I would never say no to such appetizing rolls like yours :)
ReplyDeleteHappy November! I love when non-asian ingredients are rolled into wonton wraps. First of all, my non-creative brain is pre-programmed to make only Asian dishes using wontons, and I can't think of how I can adapt using wraps and make something different from ordinary egg rolls. I'm being serious. I never thought of ham, cheese, and sour cream in the wrap! And everyone will love this without any doubt! Have a great weekend Sandra! Oh and don't go sleep, everyone is waiting for your good food at birthday parties!
ReplyDeleteWow, this looks YUM! I would have never thought to use egg roll wrappers like that. Will have to give this a try =)
