Baklava is delicious sweet treat that I grow up with. It is too strong for me and it is definitely not guilt free dessert that's why I am making Baklava rarely.
I have this post in draft for while now and totally forgot all about it, since I don't have Baklava in my collection of recipes, today is the day that you'll see this sweet beauty on my blog!:)
Little bit about Baklava:
Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of Filo pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup. It is characteristic of the cuisines of the former Ottoman Empire and much of central and southwest Asia. Now days Baklava is made in many households and pastry shops all over the world with their own version and this is mine!
I added chocolate syrup because I loved the idea and it gives that extra kick and flavor to each bite, and I cut sugar in half because I substituted it with pure honey.
~ Chocolate (addition) idea came from one amazing blogger ~Chelsea aka "Sprinkles of Parsley" ..however I only used bit of chocolate Syrup, and you can check her fantastic Baklava version with chocolate garnish here!

Ingredients:
- 1 package phyllo dough(Fillo), defrosted
- 1/2 Lb (1cup/225g ) chopped mixed nuts + 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/3 of cup(75.6g ) unsalted butter, or oil
Syrup:
- 2 cupful (474ml) water
- 1/4 cup (56g) sugar
- 1 Lemon + lemon zest
- 1/3 cup (75.6ml ) honey, for syrup
Chocolate for ganache *optional
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F(175 degrees C).
- Butter or oil the bottoms and sides of a 9x13 inch pan.
- Chop nuts and mix with sugar and set aside.
- Let the Fillo dough get defrosted to be at the room temp. if you open up the package always cover the dough with the sightly wet cloth to prevent from drying . Once at the room temp. Unroll and cut whole stack in half to fit pan.
- Cover phyllo with a dampened cloth to keep from drying out as you work.
- Place 5 sheets of dough in bottom of a pan, butter thoroughly.
- Sprinkle 3 Tbs. of nut mixture on top.
- Put 10 more sheets and in between butter/oil it just a little- and use the rest of nuts mixture ~layer it and fill/sprinkle as you go for each sheet.
- The top layer should be about 8 sheets thick.
- Using a sharp knife cut into diamond or square shapes all the way to the bottom of the pan.
- You may cut into 4 long rows the make diagonal cuts.
- Bake for about 40 minutes or until baklava is golden and crisp.
Syrup:
- Start making syrup before you start baklava. It will give enough time for the syrup to cool down. Or look the tip bellow!
- Boil sugar and water until sugar is melted. Add honey, lemon juice and lemon zest.
- Simmer for about 20 minutes or until the syrup become thicker (it needs to be really thick so you might end up simmering for more than 20 min.)
- Once baklava is done, remove from the oven and immediately spoon cold syrup over it.
Let it cool down completely and enjoy this sweet and delicious treat!
Enjoy!
Your friend,
Sandra

Oh my goodness, Sandra! Your baklava just made me so hungry!!!
ReplyDeleteI love Baklava and I've been wanting to try making homemade ones. Can you tell me where I can buy phyllo dough?
That looks decadent and so yummy! The chocolate syrup on it sounds interesting :) I love the idea of cold syrup on hot baklava :) Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteOdlično izgleda, baš zamamno, sočno
ReplyDeleteThat is one GORGEOUS mouthwatering Baklava, yum! Great recipe =]
ReplyDeleteMy husband LOVES baklava... yet I have never made it as I have always been intimidated by it... I have always thought it would be too difficult to make. I also find it a bit too sweet for my taste, but by making it at home I could adjust the sugar and maybe reduce it a bit? I love the addition of chocolate... that surely makes it a little less sweet! :-) Thanks so much for sharing this Sandra! Great pictures as always.
ReplyDeleteSandra, ja potpuno drugačije pravim baklavu, ali ova tvoja izgleda toliko privlačno da bih sad iskoristila paket kora koji imam u frižideru da je napravim. Njam!
ReplyDeleteMmmm - that's heavenly tasty!!! Your baklava is PERFECT, Sandra! And I love that first photo :)
ReplyDeleteSandra - well let me tell you that I think I'm going to have to make this! You see, baklava is one of those things that is really intimidating to make unless you have a trusted recipe from a friend. My husband and I were at an Easter luncheon at a very fancy place recently and the ppor guy ate 3 servings of it because he loves it so much and I am too fearful to try making it at home!
ReplyDeleteHello.I keep on reading your recipe.I would love to make this..I am content only of buying whenever I wanted it. Yours is so good..I am tempted to make but I have to muster enough courage to do this.. lol
ReplyDeleteA sweet indulgence. That baklava is spectacular. I would rather eat baklava for a treat than chocolate. I didn't know I can have them both.
ReplyDeleteNever seen baklava with chocolate, interesting. I guess there's a really good reason why baklava is served in small portions, though it does not stop us from going back for more:)
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious ! Haven't eaten baklva in ages, wish I had some now.

ReplyDeleteI've never made baklava before but I've always loved eating it! My ex-boss' wife used to own a baklava shop and he used to bring to work tins of the stuff...my favorite are the pistachio-filled ones. I think your homemade ones look scrumptious, and what could be better than drizzling chocolate all over it?!
ReplyDeleteBaklava is one of my all time favorite desserts. It is not intimidating to me to make, but time consuming, that is worth every minute, and every precious bite!
ReplyDeleteSandra yours turned out superb, fantastic! Love the chocolate drizzle on it:DDD

ReplyDeleteI usually make one for Christmas with small lucks inside as tradition requires it, and sometimes, maybe once more in the year. In fact, your post is really inspiring me to make one soon :-)

ReplyDeleteBeautiful job! We make baklava every year around Christmas, so it's definitely not a common occurrence in our household either. The hot vs. cold tip about the baklava and syrup is right on. Something my mommy taught me :)

ReplyDeleteOh Sandra, this fabulous! Baklava is one of my favorite (occasional) treats and I've been morally preparing to make one for quite a while. If I hadn't hit a record of sugar consumption in the past days, I'd be running to make it right about now! :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks absolutely wonderful. I am sitting here with a cup of coffee and I sure would like some right now! Thanks for coming by. Hope you have a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteI feel guilty just LOOKING at it! Too delicious for words.
ReplyDeleteYour baklava is a beauty. This is a dessert I dream about since having to give up gluten. There just isn't a way to make gluten-free phyllo pastry, nevermind to do baklava justice!
